What you should know about Macedon Park Farm
Established in 2001 with the purchase of Jeroka Downs, 80 acres of land in Kyneton, Victoria, this marked the begin of our tree change from Melbourne’s internal suburbs to the beautiful Macedon Ranges. In the first years, we run various Angus and Hereford steers and heifers. After a Spring highlighted by pulling calves, deceased calves and paralyses cows, we thought there had to be an easier option! Enter the bowline Cattle After the initial purchase of abundant commercial bowline cows and heifers from a nearby breeder, it soon became clear the merits of this breed to beginner or hobby farmers, such as ourselves. Their smaller size and naturally gentle temperament meant that animals were less intimidating and posed less of a risk of injury. A further gain is that bowlines are naturally polled meaning no horns or no dehorning calves! Today we run a stud herd, immaculate commercial herd (pure bred but unregistered) and a composite herd of larger beef framed cows joined to a bowline bull. To compliment the cattle herd, we also run spotless bred Suffolk sheep (The dismal faced sheep) and some first cranky ewes joined to terminal Suffolk sires. In 2009 the whole tree change was done with the sale of our Melbourne home of over 30 years to buy Dresden Park in New Gisborne. To retain things interesting, the Gisborne property is home to Tyrone Park pony stud where we breed Shetland, miniature pony and miniature horses. So stay tuned, it is hoped in the imminent coming we will be offering farm stay at Weeroona in Clarke field, once the renovations are complete. This all changed with the buy of our beginning farm, 80 acres in Kyneton in 2002. How we reach to buy our first horses was probably not ideal for novices. But put a girl who always wanted a horse in a sale stuffed of poor horses in the middle of a drought, it was always going to last the same way we purchased 2 horses! The beginning buy was Flight later renamed foodie (after a well obvious Irish horny Uncle) who was an 14 year used thoroughbred gelding. Also purchased was Imperial Vader a dark Shetland gelding with the purpose of being a paddock comrade for foodie as healthy as a late birthday present for Travis the stud co founder. He actually was a she, as we discovered numerous weeks later he was sold as a gelding, we did not check, an embarrassing gap in our equine knowledge base. Renamed Dada she soon positioned herself as the queen of the farm and bossed everyone, humans included. Friends of ours visiting the farm soon discovered this when she refused to let them get out of the car by backing her rear last to them and menacing to kick. Shetlands and later miniature ponies proved to be an crucial therapy too. Ponies proved to be particular as they are little and generally tame which means they are less intimidating and safer for people confined to wheelchairs. Shetlands are often inquisitive and seem less intimidated by the wheelchair and Travis is qualified to participate in protection and stud activities to a greater extend and with less risk of injury. Today we specialism in miniature ponies, horses and Shetlands 8.2 hands and under. We breed a few foals maximum years and have children’s ponies for sale at various times.
